Peace River - 1985: (pop. 5,907) In the town's recent Economic
Development Group survey patrons awarded highest kudos to the friendliness
and individual service provided by downtown Peace River merchants.
One challenge here: promotion techniques must be improved if the
town expects to increase its share of tourist dollars. Co-ordinator:

Peace River -1985: Here's a vision of Christmas past. Three years
ago the Main Street Canada demonstration town of Fort Macleod organized
a successful Santa Claus parade. Now another Alberta community has
taken up the theme: at press time, merchants in Peace River bring
old St. Nick to town. He'll arrive via the North Alberta Rail Co.
station, a local landmark that will be decked out in Christmas lights.
The parade, which will move through downtown, launches five weeks
of Christmas promotions. Main Street Newsletter Sept/Oct. 1985,
Vol.1, No.5.

Peace River - 1987: This community also has a new Main Street co-ordinator.
She is Joan Goldhawk who, after graduating from the Northern Alberta
Institute of Technology (majoring in marketing and sales) worked
in the Strathcona County economic development department. Joan reports
plenty of activities underway in Peace River. Among them: River
Day, which features the last leg of the world championship jet boat
races. Also in the works: sidewalk improvements on 100th Street
feature new light standards, sidewalks, kiosks, benches, and trees.
Welcome, Joan. Main Street Canada Newsletter, July/Aug 1987, Vol.3,

Peace River - 1987: Joan Goldhawk says the local Jaywalker Jamboree
was also a success. People took the opening ceremony (sawing through
a two by four) in stride. Main Street Canada Newsletter, 1987, Vol.3,

Peace River - 1988: "Our community hosted a Development Issues
Forum in late November. There were about 75 participants including
developers, town council members, builders, engineers, downtown
co-ordinators, and representatives from Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton,
and Grande Prairie. Among matters discussed were barriers to developing
a community. This is a topic of particular interest here since we
are focusing on funding sources, development costs, and a housing
shortage caused by the development of a new plant." Joan Goldhawk.
