Medicine Hat -1986 (pop. 40,380): This city (an Indian legend claims
it was named for a place where a medicine man wore a hat) is in
the Province's south-east, along the South Saskatchewan River, almost
midway between Moose Jaw and Calgary. Started in 1883 with the coming
of the CPR, it boomed at the turn of this century thanks to the
development of natural gas. The new Main Street co-ordinator is
Robert Graham, a landscape architect who has experience in community
planning in Manitoba and northern Ontario. Why join the programme?
"It is recognized throughout the business community and city
hall that downtown has great potential. There is a strong mall here.
We want an equally strong downtown." For more information,
